A big day in sports today so here we go:
College Basketball:With school finals and winter break over, college basketball is back in full swing with 20 ranked teams playing today. There have been a lot of great games, but the best game of the night has yet to come with 18 Arizona travelling to 2 Memphis. A 3-pointer with 2 seconds by Michael Flowers of Wisconsin gave the Badgers a one point victory over 9 Texas. 19 Miami (FL) suffered its first loss of the season as Winthrop beat the Hurricanes 76-70. Just finished, Oklahoma defeated 23 West Virginia in double overtime. Those games and more are discussed in today’s earlier blog post.
UCLA Hires Neuheisel As Head Coach: The UCLA Bruins have hired their former QB Rick Neuheisel as their new head coach. The Bruins fired Karl Dorrell on December 3rd after five years as head coach. Neuheisel takes over a football program that went 6-6 and lost to BYU in their bowl game. The loss in the Las Vegas Bowl was tough as the Bruins had a field blocked as the time expired and lost the game by one point. UCLA was looking at their defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker for their coaching job and other schools will definately look at him to fill their coaching vacancy. Neuheisel has already stated that he hopes to keep Walker on the staff. UCLA had a mediocre season this year, ending in a tough loss, and they are hoping that Neuheisel will be able to take the program to the next level.
Testaverde Expeted To Retire After Game Sunday: After a 21 year career, Vinny Testaverde is finally ready to retire after the Panthers’ final game at Tampa Bay. Testaverde was sitting at home when he received a call from the Panthers after they had lost both Jake Delhomme and David Carr to injuries. He agreed to come back to the NFL and has been starting for the Panthers since October 14th. Yet, Testaverede has admitted that his body cannot recover as fast from week to week and that he is ready to walk away from the game he love. Testaverde has been a class act throughout his career and a great player for many years. A clear-cut Hall of Famer, the NFL is losing a truly great player in Testaverde.
Zook Wins Coach Of The Year: Illinios head coach Ron Zook won the Liberty Mutual coach of the year award after leading the Illini to a 9-3 seasona and a birth in the Rose Bowl. Illinois went 2-10 last year and played horribly all year. Zook turned the program around completely, turning a 2-10 disaster into a 9-3 BCS Bowl Team
Patriots Pursuit of Perfection:Of course I have to say something about the game of the night. The New England Patriots are travelling ot New York tonight to face the Giants and Eli Manning. As I’m sure you know, a victory would give the Patriots a perfect regular season at 16-0. They would be the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to go undefeated though the Dolphins played only 12 game and of those 12 games, only 2 were against teams with winning records. That isn’t the only record on the line as Brady needs 2 touchdown passes to break the record for most touchdown passes in a season. Moss needs 2 touchdown receptions to break the record for most receptions in a season. The Patriots need to score 6 points to break the record for the most points in a season. There have been a lot of questions about whether or not the Giants will play all of their starters for the full game and risk injuries. If I am on the Giants, I want to play every minute and spoil the Pats’ perfect record. To defeat the Patriots on the final game of the regular season would be so incredibly satsifying that it could even propel the Giants to a victory in their playoff game. Knowing Tom Coughlin, the Giants will play all out on Saturday and try their hearts out to crash the Patriots’ perfect season.
